On the way back to Dubai from my recent Oman road trip, we passed through the old city of Bahla, in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of Oman on the route back to the border crossing at Al Ain in the UAE.
Bahla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site town, located 40 km away from Nizwa, and about 200 km from Oman’s capital Muscat, it is notable as the home of one of the oldest fortresses in the country, the 13th century Bahla Fort and the town is famous for it’s pottery.
Arriving in the hours before sunset, the atmospherics were set for the exploration around the outside of the fort and the crumbling old town.

The old fort, it’s all about the windows…
Below the fort, a new building with some intricate window tracery…
Even more definition…
Golden hour casting shadows across the buildings of the old town…
Looking up in a narrow alley…
The windows form faces in the old city…
How old?
Water channels or Falaj run underneath many of the building, steps down to a water collection and laundry area. Running water existed here…
Windows to catch any air in these tight and narrow streets….
The modern sphere doesn’t detract from the aura of this old, crumbling city…
Shadows on the windows, imagine the life here in days gone by…
A wall full of window faces…
Highlighted in the setting sun, windows, it’s all about air….
Some renovation required, I hope it’s all preserved for posterity…
Low down on the ground, it looks damp…
I think we can apply window here…
Looking back up the steep old town streets to the dominating fort…
A view through a window…
Down an alley, intricate brickwork remains..
and another ancient alcove and window remain in this fascinating town….
Too low for a sunset shot, the orange light behind the trees made us realise it was time for the next 4 hour drive to home, finally…

The one with the modern dome made me think it would be a great start to a movie about ET’s landing in an ancient city. Really great photos.
